چکیده

A nearly monomineralic 1.5 m thick bentonite bed sampled in Melo (Uruguay) appears to be a pure high-charge montmorillonite: [Si3.94 Al0.06] (Al1.40 Fe0.11 Ti0.02 Mg0.49 Mn0.01) O10 (OH)2 Na0.01 K0.08 Ca0.18. However, contrasting swelling behaviors have been evidenced by fitting the experimental X-ray diffraction patterns recorded on oriented preparations of the same sample in different saturation states. According to the expandability of the layers in the Ca-, Kand K-Ca-saturated (that is saturated first with K and subsequently with Ca) states, three "layer types" were defined. Low-, intermediate-, and high-charge layers are fully, partly, and not expandable, respectively, after K-saturation. Collapse of high-charge layers is not reversible after subsequent Ca-saturation, most likely because of tetrahedral substitutions. These three different layer types are segregated in two distinct randomly interstratified mixedlayer phases. TSA and CEC are shown to depend on the interlayer cation composition.

Chemical signature of two Permian volcanic ash deposits within a bentonite bed from Melo, Uruguay.

A Permian bentonite deposit at Melo, Uruguay is composed of a calcite-cemented sandstone containing clay pseudomorphs of glass shards (0-0.50 m) overlying a pink massive clay deposit (0.50-2.10 m). The massive bed is composed of two layers containing quartz and smectite or pure smectite respectively. The smectite is remarkably homogeneous throughout the profile: it is a complex mixed layer comp...

Geochemistry and genesis of Mehredjan bentonite deposit, southeast of Khoor, Isfehan province

Mehredjan bentonite deposit is located ~33 km southeast of Khoor in Isfehan province. It includes 15 discrete outcrops and occurs as layered and massive forms within a volcano-clastic sequence. Bentonitization process was accompanied with development of minerals such as montmorillonite, quartz, cristobalite, calcite, kaolinite, halite, albite, orthoclase, and muscovite. The collected field and ...

The Teminan bentonite deposit is located in ~25 km southwest of Naeen, Isfehan Province. This deposit has layered and massive form and is an alteration product of tuff breccias of Oligo-Miocene age. Mineralogical data show that montmorillonite, heulandite, clinoptilolite, quartz, anorthite, orthoclase, calcite, beidellite, illite, and microcline are the principal rock-forming minerals in this d...

The Esfezar bentonite deposit is located 50 km east of Birjand, in south Khorasan Province and as a part of eastern boundary of lut Block.  This deposit is a diagenetic bentonite type, because of its layering, existence of gypsum between bentonite layers, and expanded shape. Petrography and chemical analysis of host rocks in Esfezar bentonite deposit indicate that they are mainly of dacite and ...

بررسی کانی‌شناسی و ژئوشیمیایی کانسار بنتونیت مهرآباد (شرق اصفهان)

Mehrabad bentonite deposit appears to be derived from the volcano- sedimentary materials of Oligo-Miocene age by transformation in a lagoon environment. Based on analysis, bentonite samples contain minerals such as montmorillonite, albite, clinoptilolite, quartz, cristobalite, calcite, gypsum, halite, muscovite and nantronite. Conversion of shard glasses to bentonite and zeolite has occurred un...
